Dear Parent/Guardian

I have been assigned to provide an after school Science enrichment to a small group of students in grades 5-6. My objective is to instruct the students in the computer programming software StarLogo TNG 1.5 authored by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

This programming is proven to engage and enhance multiple forms of thinking in students. Students will learn how to create virtual worlds based on their personal programming. The programming is composed of block units that are assembled together similar to puzzle pieces. The finished programs can be open ended (games) or closed (simulations). The virtual world output is immediately available to the student and the ability of reflect, plan, recreate, and retest is readily available. Though the programming is “plug and play”, very advance programs can be developed. This software can be used in later years by your child to model any possible simulation. The limitation is your child’s imagination.

The StarLogo TNG application and student authored programming can be run off of any USB flash drive on any computer. No installation is required. This program is free and available in both PC and Mac versions. This website (http://pmt-starlogotng.wikispaces.com/) will document our use of StarLogo TNG and act as a resource for your child.

Sincerely
